The city of Istanbul recently launched a series of international architecture/art/urbanism competitions. The Uskudar Memorial competition called for a sculpture/urban intervention memorializing the legacy of Mimar Sinan (the architect-in-chief of the 16th century Ottoman empire) in the neighborhood, where the architect has three buildings in a 1 km radius. Our proposal suggests installing a large-scale, inhabitable sculpture that frames views of the three neighboring Mimar Sinan buildings. The sculpture acts as a social activator for the large, previously under-designed, land-filled waterfront. The material used, gabion, is a contemporary take on Sinan's material of predilection, stone. Gabion allows a permeable, light, and sustainable structure. The tectonic design of the sculpture is derived from Sinan's designs and geometric voids. In collaboration with Tahsin Inanici.
